What Is An Audiologist?

Blog Synopsis:

  • The team at AOC is comprised of fully credentialed ENT physicians, audiologists, and surgeons.
  • If you’re suffering from a condition that affects your ears, you may be referred to one of our audiologists, a health care professional who specializes in the treatment of ear-related problems.
  • In this blog, the ENT physicians and audiologists at AOC explain what an audiologist is and why you may need to see one for your ear issue!

Audiologists are specially trained health care professionals who diagnose, manage, and treat problems specific to one’s ears, most commonly, hearing and balance issues. An audiologist has received either their Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.), or their Master’s degree in Audiology from an accredited, university-based graduate program. Individuals with the following conditions may require the medical advice and guidance of an audiologist:

  • Hearing problems that require hearing aids
  • Assistive hearing devices
  • Tinnitus management
  • Equilibrium problems (balance)
  • Cochlear implants
  • Bone anchored hearing aids
  • Swimmer’s ear
  • Site of lesion testing
  • And more

In addition to earning a degree in audiology, most audiologists obtain additional licenses or certifications to excel in their field. All of our dispensing audiologists at AOC have earned their Certificate of Clinical Competence in the field of Audiology (CCC-A), which is a nationally recognized certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Our audiologists work closely with the physicians at AOC to ensure patients receive a smooth, continuum of care. Should a patient’s condition require surgery or a more aggressive treatment approach, our audiologists will coordinate care with the appropriate AOC ENT physician.

If you’re suffering from a hearing problem, it’s imperative you receive a comprehensive exam from one of our audiologists. They will either outfit you with a highly advanced hearing device, or they’ll secure care for your condition through our ENT physicians. To schedule an appointment, call one of our locations today!
